Cornu Wins Title Against Classy Kiilu

It was a very close, competitive and well-fought bout that could have gone either way, had it not been for the too-wide scores of judges Noel Monnet and Bertrand Chagnoux who both had it 116-112, and Dominique Schmit who outrageously scored 119-109 in favor of Cornu and must have been watching another fight.

While it can fairly be argued that Cornu is a deserved winner and new champion, the scores were totally out of line, some would say scandalous, and the judge’s performances will have consequences.

The WBF Executives will meet in the near future to decide what those consequences will be.

The fight itself was very technical, with Cornu having success going forward and Kiilu boxing beautifully on the retreat, countering nicely with punches to body and head. The home-man appeared to be the stronger of the two, but Kiilu looked to be the better boxer.

In the end it was anybody’s guess who would be declared the winner, until the judges scores were announced and falsely made it look like an easy fight for Cornu. However, Cornu performed well and it was no robbery that he won the fight.

With the victory Sebastien “The Scorpion” Cornu moved from Journeyman to Champion-status and improved his professional record to 11-8-3 (6), while Kiilu, after five straight victories, dropped to 35-11-2 (21). Paul Bert Cercle promoted.
