When it comes to name the
quintessential promoter in the
World Boxing Federation for the
last three years, inevitably the
name Ulf Steinforth springs to
mind. Having promoted a total of
17 WBF title bouts in that time
(a dozen of them for world
crowns), Steinforth’s SES Boxing
has also netted seven annual as
well as four “Boxer of the
Month” awards. That’s quite a
record. |

That said, SES Boxing started
from scratch in 2002, but was
with a single-mindedness
developed into a company that
today stands in the small elite
of German promoters and
certainly made its mark
internationally with their stars
Robert Stieglitz, Jan Zaveck,
Lukas Konecny – all world
champions of different
organizations – as well as
setting benchmarks in female
boxing with ex-star Natascha
Ragosina.
“I have a passion for boxing and
I am very proud of what my
boxers achieve,” says Steinforth,
whose wife Peggy heads the
marketing department at SES. It
may sound like a cliché, and
certainly not all boxers who
were on SES’ books over the
years fit into it, but in a way,
most of them feel like being in
a family. Nobody illustrates
this fact more so than Dirk
Dzemski, the main trainer at the
Magdeburg headquarters and
freshly named “WBF Trainer of
the Year 2011”. |

He was the first headline
fighter that Steinfurth
developed and when his career in
the ring came to an end in 2006,
he took over training duties.
Dzemski quickly developed into a
class act and is respected
highly even by those who used to
train alongside him during his
active days as a fighter –
although they also see a friend
and confidant in the
40-year-old, much like the ideal
father who is boss and pal at
the same time.
WBF Vice President Jean Marcel
Nartz has been an early advisor
to Steinforth and sums it up:
“Ulf is not a sneaky person, but
everyone who deals with him –
from his boxers, to TV stations
and sponsors to other promoters
– know what they are getting.
When he gives his word, he
always keeps it and when he
gives his heart to a fighter, he
knows he can count on Ulf
always. Plus, he is probably the
fastest payer in all of boxing;
when you do business with SES,
everybody gets paid without a
single day delay. And the level
of organization is outstanding.
All this is what makes SES such
a success.
”What is on the agenda for the
future, given that economical
problems have caused huge
problems for many promoters? “I
have many plans for SES and
while I know the roads always
remains rocky in this business I
am full of enthusiasm for the
future,” sighs Steinforth and
continues: “Every time one of my
boxers wins, especially when we
are talking titles, I get a high
and feel the rewards of all the
work.”
It certainly looks like the odd
WBF title will feature in the
on-going success story that is
SES Boxing in Magdeburg,
Germany. |
